Species Identities and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Enterococcus Isolated from Clinical Specimens

Abstract
The species identities and antimicrobial susceptibility of Enterococcus isolated during November 1991 to April 1992 at some medical college hospital in Seoul were determined. The results obtained were as follows:
1. Among the 204 isolates 62.8 % (128 strains) were isolated from urine, 17.6 % (36 strains) wound infection, 6.8 % (14 strains) bile and 3.9 % (8 strains) genital tract.
2. Enterococcus species were isolated 66.2 % (135 strains) of E. faecalis, 22.0 % (45 strains) of E. faecium and 2.5 % (5 strains) of E. durans, but 9.3 % (19 strains) were unidentified species.
3. 204 strains of Enterococcus were all susceptible for vancomycin, also E faecalis and unidentified Enterococcus were moderately susceptible more than 80 % to cephalothin, penicillin G and ampicillin, while E. faecium were resistant pattern to amplicillin.
4. Gentamicin and oxacillin were resistant more than 90 % among Enterococcus species.
